In Someday All of This Will Be Yours, sixth poetry collection by Michael Favala Goldman, the poet reminds us of the inevitability of inheritance, how we are powerlessness in our unconscious adapting to and being permeated by our history and our surroundings, though we do have volition with regard to how we react to this process.
In “The ones with the split tails are terns,” Goldman writes, “It’s easy to blame the past/harder to stop it perpetuating. // The future seems like /it could be easier// but only because/it never happened.” With dark humor and familiar scenery, these poems reflect on the universal conflict inherent in being human with regard to relationship to others, to nature, and to ourselves. “There you are/containing multitudes,// wondering/if anyone else notices.”
The reader finds here mundane domestic scenes of Sunday cleaning, playing cards, and hiking as doorways into the subconscious, which dredge up barriers to belonging. From “Stamina”: “Whatever is wrong/stays wrong//as long as /you can stand it.”
In addition to confrontations with commonplace self-sabotage, Someday All of This Will Be Yours holds reflections on the creative process. “There is your offering. An extension/ of what came before. It was you,/ then it was yours, now it is ours.”
Although we may feel ourselves struggling, we are nonetheless part of a continuum, a flow. How will we manage? What will we leave to those who come after?
